If you’re looking for your next peak experience, the upcoming performance of The Quantum Mechanics must definitely be on your “to-do” list.
Coffee and Humans have done much to inspire and nourish the creative aspect of life…and Coffee houses became one of the first community-oriented spaces for people to meet, experience a variety of intellectual pursuits, and listen to the newest music of the time. AGAR and Second Stage continue this tradition in contemporary style. The Quantum Mechanics will take it to the Next Level with a new “interactive” tune titled “Summa-Shamanama”* by Ed Mikenas. It will have you smiling where you sit and dancing where you dare. In this performance, TQM will be brewing up more new works with a focus on changing your consciousness with a stream of musical goodness. You will hear the Blues, some BeBop, and a bit of Western Swing, all served up with original tunes by Ed Mikenas.
*Summa-Shamanama is a word to describe a feeling of happiness or excitement. It is generally used when other positive expressions do not first come to mind.

Ken Matthews previously resided in Maryland and Northern Virginia where he headed his New Orleans jazz quartet “Laissez Foure” that played regularly in the Washington, DC, area for more than 12 years. Ken is originally from Lynchburg where he played in various EC Glass high school bands as well as while he attended Virginia Tech. Since moving back to Lynchburg, Ken has also opened a coffee shop in a small town in Colombia, South America, near the ancestral home of his mother.
The band’s title is a play on words; it’s a misspelling of the French phrase “Laissez Faire” meaning “Let It Be.” “Faire” has been replaced with “Foure,” which refers to four people in the band. Laissez Foure is always exciting and lots of fun! And Ken often invites different local area players to sit in with him.

LENNY MARCUS
Jazz Times Magazine has described Lenny Marcus’ music as “Infectious!” No wonder, since Lenny worked for many years in New Orleans studying and performing with legends such as Ray Bryant, Ellis Marsalis, and Alvin Batiste. He has a strong blues-oriented left hand, thanks to Bryant. Lenny possesses a superior melodic imagination and highly developed arranging and orchestration skills that become palpable throughout a diversity of styles-swinging, cool, sophisticated, Jazzified Beethoven masterpieces, Latin, toe-tapping, high energy as well as beautifully contemplative and engaging. This trio’s latest release is “When A Door Opens.”International famed players who have performed and recorded with LMT include Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, Frank Foster, Brian Lynch, David “ Fathead “ Newman (Ray Charles tenor), and Jane Powell. Lenny has performed in three New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest, Spoleto, Barbados, and Grenada Jazz festivals in addition to appearing four times in Wash DC at the famed Blues Alley with his trio. Lenny has most recently played for AGAR with Los Gatos.

LARRY SCOTT is one of the most sought-after drummers in Southwestern VA. Among his many accomplishments, he has opened for Kool and the Gang and played with the Lynchburg Symphony. He is an instructor at the Lynchburg Music School. Cadence and Jazztimes magazines have given him high marks for his percussive style. For AGAR, Larry has previously played with Los Gatos, Lew Taylor Trio, and Chris Magee.
ZACHARY McDONALD of New Tripoli, PA, now a Baltimore, MD native, got his start as a jazz musician by playing with well-known artists in and around Roanoke, VA such as Cyrus Pace, Brian Mesko, and Lenny Marcus. He has formally studied bass with Paul Langosch and Ben Williams. Jazz, however, is not his only musical venture as he performs and records with other local Roanoke and Blacksburg rock, indie, and ambient acts such as Electric Chameleon, Missed Her, his own solo project, and an additional duo project with percussionist Denver Nuckolls.
