Karenne Wood (1960-2019) was an enrolled member of the Monacan Nation. She is fondly remembered by family, colleagues and friends for her creativity, power, advocacy, scholarship and humor. Wood held a gubernatorial appointment as Chair of the Virginia Council on Indians for four years, and served on the Advisory Council for the Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission during the 2007 quadrennial celebration of Virginia. She edited The Virginia Indian Heritage Trail (2007) and curated the exhibition Beyond Jamestown: Virginia Indians Past and Present, at the Virginia Museum of Natural History.

In 2008, Wood was named director of the Virginia Indian Heritage Program (later Virginia Indian Programs) at Virginia Humanities, a state humanities council in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Wood was a published poet of two books, Weaving the Boundary and Markings on Earth. Her thesis was on the Monacan language, which is no longer spoken.
The Karenne Wood program is presented by The Monacan Nation and the Monacan Nation Cultural Foundation (MINCF), Amherst Glebe Arts Response (AGAR) and the Amherst Museum and Historical Society (ACMHS) with generous support from Virginia Humanities and NEA Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
