Amherst County Museum and Historical Society
Hamble Center (behind museum)
(154 South Main Street, Amherst 24521)
Coolwell is an historically black neighborhood of Amherst County, many of whose residents are descended from enslaved families at the Sweet Briar Plantation. Coolwell families built homes, established the Coolwell Baptist Church and the Mount Airy School. Today, members of these families remain in the Amherst area as educators, administrators and medical professionals. Our speakers Lynn Rainville, PhD and Crystal Rosson will present first-person video interviews and their individual historical research about the Coolwell Neighborhood of Amherst County.
Dr. Lynn Rainville is an author, speaker and public historian who studies ordinary Virginians doing extraordinary things in the past. Crystal Rosson is a local community historian and genealogist. This program is presented by AGAR In collaboration with the Amherst County Museum and Historical Society.
