Aug. 27, 2022 Gus Miller Welcomes Vince Lewis Back to Virginia! Beloved Lynchburg crooner Gus Miller invites you to help him welcome virtuoso guitarist Vince Lewis back to Virginia. Gus and Vince will be joined on stage by John Jenson on trombone and Bob Packman on Drums. The group will perform selections from The American Songbook. Sept. 24, 2022 Isaac Williams Ensemble Pianist Isaac Williams and his jazz ensemble give a modern jazz approach to Amherst Java and Jazz. Oct. 29, 2022 Joseph Henson Jazz Saxophonist Joseph Henson and his jazz quartet invite you to a “release party” of Henson’s latest CD for October’s Java & Jazz concert. Come and hear Henson’s newest works. Copies of the CD’s will be for sale. Nov. 26, 2022 “Quantum Mechanics Jazz Ed Mikenas a.k.a. “Ashik al-Marqaha” appearing as “Energy” on Steel Guitar, Worth Proffitt appearing as “Matter” on Drums, and Andy Aeschbacher appearing as “Momentum” on Bass. The Quantum Mechanics will explore the origins of coffee and bring you some history, stories, trivia, and tales of the Coffeehouse and its interface with Jazz performance. Songs include “Blues, some Western Swing, a little Be-bop, and several of Ed’s original tunes.” Dec. 17, 2022 BellaDonna BellaDonna is Laurabella Owens on piano and Donna Kay on vocals. Owens is an established blues and jazz performer, composer, and educator. Donna Kay is a jazz singer, composer and preservationist who returned to Central Virginia in 2021. Kay curates and performs for her monthly 6th St. Sessions at the Academy Center of The Arts. |
Jan. 28, 2023 Quintana Allstars Al Mallet on alto and tenor sax; Ernest Deane on trumpet; Worth Proffitt on drums; Ed Mikenas on bass; and Glen Buck on Keyboards. Mallet and Deane have played together since the 1950s when they were students at Dunbar High School in Lynchburg. The band’s specialties are Latin jazz of Antonio Carlos Jobim and jazz standards of the 40’s 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Feb. 25, 2023 “Laissez Foure” with Kenneth Mathews Jaramillo Laissez Foure, led by Ken Matthews Jaramillo, is a New Orleans-inspired jazz quartet focusing on music from 1920 through 1950. You’ll hear many recognizable songs made popular or written by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael and Fats Waller. Come listen to tunes from the Golden Era of jazz and beyond March 25, 2023 Henson Jazz Joseph Henson, former Army Blues jazz saxophonist for 30 years, now heads up the jazz program at Liberty University. With his quartet, Henson again plays a combination of jazz favorites and his own original works. April 29, 2023 Matt Howard Band Matt Howard and band will play an evening of blues and acoustic tunes. May 27, 2023 Gus Miller & Friends Gus Miller revives favorite memories through jazz arrangements of well-loved tunes from the American Songbook, accompanied by a trio of area favorite instrumentalists. June 16, 2023 Paddy D Quartet The ever-popular Paddy D Quartet returns to Amherst Java and Jazz after last year’s sold out performance. Singer-Songwriter Paddy Dougherty, will play guitar and piano, with Glenn Buck on saxophone and piano; Eric Hollandsworth on bass; and Larry Scott on drums and percussion. |
